former mining town, Mammoth – originally Mammoth Camp - takes its name from the
historic Mammoth mine located nearby. More recently, the town served as a bedroom
community to the San Manuel mine until its closing in 2003. Mammoth today is a
small (not extinct!), friendly and laid-back, but notably spread out community
along bustling State Highway 77, its ongoing lifeblood. Most services are located
along or near the highway, with the post office along Main Street one block east.
