Clifton
and Morenci are sister communities, the former an historic mining town, the latter
a modern, company-built town at the foot of a massive open-pit copper mine. Each
community offers its own distinct cultural charm and eccentricity, and neither
is soon forgotten after visiting. Hikers using the Lower Eagle Creek Rd Spur (Segment
14) would then hitchhike 5 miles on foot into Morenci via low-speed Highway 191
(aka the Coronado Trail). Hitchhiking to and from the main route via the main
GET crossing of US 191 near the east end of Segment 14, is certainly possible,
but don't expect instant gratification, as the road is lightly traveled north
of the Morenci Mine area. See the guidebook for more on this.) Morenci offers
most hiker services, including a full-size supermarket, but those who can manage
the 3 or 4 miles extra into Clifton will be duly rewarded for their efforts. Historic
Chase Creek Street is here, as well as Jail Cave, both living relics of Clifton's
erstwhile mining heyday.
