SAFFORD
AZ Trail
miles from west terminus: 230 Distance
from GET: on route
A
bustling community located in the broad Gila Valley at the intersection of two
main travel routes, Safford (and the adjacent town of Thatcher - the two together
form a seamless unit) represents the largest stop directly along the route of
the GET (save for Phoenix and Albuquerque at the end points). Although the GET
bypasses the community's main services area, this area nonetheless remains conveniently
close by and includes a number of motels, restaurants, and full-service supermarkets.
The majority of services are located along US 70 (aka Thatcher Boulevard), the
main drag. Perhaps no area so well embodies the ˇ°Three C.sˇ± of southern Arizona.s
rural economy - copper, cotton, and cattle - as the towns situated along the Gila
Valley, and indeed cotton fields are a frequent sight as the GET tours the region.
Safford is also located along the Southern Tier Bicycle Route, with touring cyclists
often spotted along Highway 70, especially in springtime.
